Delete your account and data
AuroraChaser has no sign-up, no email and no password. Your account is your device: when the app is first used it registers itself with our server under a randomly generated, pseudonymous device identifier, and that ID is the only identity your data is ever keyed to. This page explains exactly what deleting removes and how to request it, including if you no longer have the app.
What deleting removes
Deleting your account is permanent and cannot be undone. It removes both what we hold on our servers and everything the app stores on your device:
- On our servers: your device registration, any aurora sightings you reported, any photos you uploaded and their server files, your likes, your chase-group memberships and posts, your display name, your mascot avatar, collected stamps and leaderboard entries, your push token and notification preferences, and the first-party usage events tied to your device.
- On your device: all local data - cached forecasts, your settings, selected regions, spot check-ins and your trip diary - is wiped when you delete from within the app.
Delete in the app (recommended)
The fastest and most reliable way is from inside the app: open Settings and choose Delete account. Because your account has no email or password, this in-app action is the only path that can prove the request comes from you: it is authenticated with your device's own server-issued credential. It permanently removes your device registration and everything linked to it from our servers, and wipes the app's local data on your device in the same step.
This is the primary self-service route, and we recommend it whenever you still have the app installed.
If you no longer have the device or the app
If you have uninstalled the app or lost the device, you can still ask us to delete your data. Email us at hello@aurorachaser.app from any address and include your display name (if you set one) and roughly when you used the app so we can find the right record.
We want to be honest about a real limitation. Because the account is tied only to a randomly generated device identifier - never to your name, email address or any other real-world identity - we cannot authenticate an off-device request the way the in-app action can. Requests that do not come from the device itself are therefore reviewed and verified case by case before we act on them. This is also why the in-app Settings -> Delete account flow is the surest route whenever it is available to you.
What we keep afterwards
Nothing tied to your device is retained once deletion is complete: your device registration and all content linked to it are removed from our servers, and the app's local data is wiped from your device. The one exception is our nightly server backups, kept for 14 days and used only to recover the service after a failure: a backup made before your deletion still contains your data until it expires, at most 14 days later. Abuse-prevention data is not linked to your identity - our backend stores only salted cryptographic hashes of the network a request came from, never your raw IP address, for a short rolling, capped window (a network block placed after a rule violation lasts at most 180 days), and our servers keep no access logs. Content that another user has independently saved or screenshotted outside the app is, of course, beyond our reach.
