No guarantee of aurora

AuroraChaser shows forecasts, and forecasts can be wrong. Even a score of 100 cannot promise a display. We give no warranty that the aurora will be visible at any time or place. We are not responsible for trips, costs or plans made on the basis of a forecast.

Your safety is your responsibility

Aurora viewing in Northern Norway and on Svalbard carries real risk. You alone are responsible for your safety and for the choices you make. Our safe aurora hunting page has more advice, with links to the official sources.

• Dress for extreme cold and check the weather before you go out. Conditions change fast.
• Drive carefully on icy, unlit roads. Stop only in a car park, a rest area or a lay-by meant for parking. Never stop on the road, in a passing place, at a bus stop or in a private yard or driveway. If the car park is full, drive on to the next one.
• Near roads, wear a reflector and carry a headlamp. In the polar night, drivers cannot see you without one.
• Tell someone where you are going. Many spots have no mobile coverage.
• Stay off frozen lakes, rivers, fjords and sea ice. In winter, keep away from slopes where avalanches can happen (check the official warnings on varsom.no), and keep a safe distance from cliffs and open water.
• Respect private land, fences, reindeer herding areas and local guidance.
• Watch out for wildlife. On Svalbard, polar bears are dangerous. Outside the settlements, go with a guide and follow the rules of the Governor of Svalbard.
• In an emergency in Norway, call 112 (police), 113 (ambulance) or 110 (fire).

Forecast data is provided "as is"

Forecasts combine third-party data from the providers on our Data sources page, which also lists their licences. That data is provided "as is". It may be delayed, incomplete or inaccurate, and at times unavailable. AuroraChaser and its data providers accept no liability for any loss arising from reliance on it.

Independence

AuroraChaser is independent. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any organisation whose data or services it uses, or by Apple or Google. Product names and logos belong to their owners.

Community content

Other app users can see your sightings, photos, display name and leaderboard entries. Your chase-group activity is shown to the members of that group. Approved sightings and photos may also be shown on our website, for example on the forecast page of the viewing spot or region where they were taken. You are responsible for what you post. Keep it lawful, accurate and respectful of other people and of private land, and only post content you have the right to share.

You keep ownership of what you post. By posting it, you give Honig Enterprises B.V. a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy and display that content, and to adapt it technically (for example by resizing a photo or removing its location metadata). The licence covers only what is needed to run AuroraChaser and to show your content to other users in the app and to visitors of our website. The service providers that host AuroraChaser may do the same on our behalf, for that purpose only. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies in our backups, which expire within 14 days.

Zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users

We do not tolerate objectionable content or abusive users. You must not post any of the following, or use any community feature for it:

• Harassment, bullying, threats or intimidation of anyone.
• Hate speech, or content that attacks or demeans people for who they are, such as their ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.
• Sexual or sexually explicit content, including nudity.
• Violent or graphic content, or content that encourages violence, self-harm or dangerous acts.
• Illegal content, or content that promotes illegal activity.
• Spam, scams, unsolicited advertising or attempts to trick other users.
• Impersonating another person or organisation, including through your display name or a group name.
• Sharing other people's personal data without their consent, such as their contact details, home address or other private information.
• Misleading content, such as invented sightings, photos that do not show the sighting you report, or posts unrelated to aurora watching that are meant to mislead other users.

Reporting, blocking and moderation

If you come across content or behaviour that breaks these terms, please report it in the app. You can report community photos and sightings, and report posts by other members of your chase group from Group settings. You can also block another user. Their photos, sightings, group posts and leaderboard entries are then hidden from you in the app. You can unblock them at any time under Settings > Blocked users.

We review every report and aim to act within 24 hours. We remove content that breaks these terms or the law, and accounts that post it or abuse other users can be restricted or banned from the community features. We may also review content before it is shown, and remove objectionable content that nobody has reported.

If you think we removed your content or restricted your account by mistake, you can appeal as described on our Contact page.

Partner promotions

The app and our website may show promotions for local partners. We serve them ourselves and mark them clearly as "Advertisement" (in Norwegian "Annonse"). Showing a partner does not mean we endorse them. Any purchase or booking you make with a partner is between you and the partner. We are not a party to it and accept no liability for it. A partner's link opens its own website, which has its own terms and privacy policy.

Acceptable use

AuroraChaser is licensed to you for personal, non-commercial use. You agree not to misuse the app or its data. That includes reselling the data, trying to disrupt the service, getting around its security or rate limits, and using it in any unlawful way. The files we publish under CC BY 4.0 (the region data and the score's parameter file) may be reused under that licence.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, AuroraChaser is provided without warranties of any kind. We exclude all liability for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the app or this website. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the app changes. We update the date at the top whenever we change them. Before an important change takes effect, we tell you in the app. If you keep using the app after that, you accept the current terms.
